Maa Katyayani | Day 6 of Navaratri
The Devi Kavacham names her sixth, and her verse is short, sharp, and carries the sound of a blade being drawn.
चन्द्रहासोज्ज्वलकरा शार्दूलवरवाहना।
कात्यायनी शुभं दद्यादेवि दानवघातिनी॥
Chandrahaasojjvalakaraa shaardoolavaravaahanaa,
Kaatyaayanee shubham dadyaadevi daanavaghaatinee.
Holding the shining Chandrahasa sword in her hand, riding her excellent lion mount, may Devi Katyayani, slayer of demons, bestow auspiciousness upon me.
Her name comes from a sage, Katyayana, who performed long penance with a single wish, that the Goddess herself be born as his daughter. The Vamana Purana describes her forming when the combined radiance of the gods, roused to anger by the demon Mahishasura, crystallized in Katyayana's own hermitage, and it was there that she took shape and received her name. The Kalika Purana adds a gentler layer to this, holding that it was Katyayana's own worship of her that gave her this name in the first place.
Her rise answers a crisis no single god could resolve alone. The buffalo demon Mahishasura had grown powerful enough to threaten the gods themselves, and no single force among them could stand against him individually. It was only when the anger and radiance of every god present combined into a single stream of light that Katyayani took form, a goddess made not from one source but from the united will of the entire divine council, built specifically to do what no single power could do alone.
She is shown with four arms, golden and radiant, carrying the Chandrahasa, a sword whose name joins chandra, moon, with hasa, laughter or brilliance, often translated as one who outshines the moon itself. She rides a lion, with two hands raised in gestures of protection and blessing.
Her worship carries a well-known thread into an entirely different scripture. The Bhagavata Purana describes the gopis of Vrindavan observing the Katyayani Vrata through the month of Margashirsha, praying to her for Krishna as their husband, a devotional thread that quietly links the Navadurga tradition to the Krishna leela itself.
Worship on Day 6 is said to move the seeker's energy into the Ajna, the brow chakra, the seat of intuition and inner sight, continuing the ascent that reached voice on Day 5 and now reaches the point of vision beyond the physical eye. What has been grounded, nurtured, and given voice now begins to see clearly.
Her mantra is simple to carry through the day:
ॐ देवी कात्यायन्यै नमः
Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah
Honey is considered her preferred offering, and she is prayed to especially for a harmonious and settled married life.
