Collection: Maa Siddhidatri
Maa Siddhidatri | Day 9 of Navaratri
The Devi Kavacham closes its list of nine names here, and where it began with a daughter born of the mountains, it ends with a goddess said to exist before the mountains, before creation itself, had taken any shape at all.
सिद्धगन्धर्वयक्षाद्यैरसुरैरमरैरपि।
सेव्यमाना सदा भूयात् सिद्धिदा सिद्धिदायिनी॥
Siddhagandharvayakshaadyair asurairamarairapi,
Sevyamaanaa sadaa bhooyaat siddhidaa siddhidaayinee.
Worshipped forever by Siddhas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, and even by Asuras and the immortal gods themselves, may Siddhidatri, giver of perfection, always bestow her gifts.
Her name joins siddhi, spiritual attainment or perfection, with datri, giver. Her own verse names something no other goddess in this sequence claims quite so directly, that she is worshipped equally by gods, demons, and celestial beings alike, drawing no line between who deserves her grace and who does not.
Tradition places her origin before the universe had form, when Shiva himself is said to have worshipped the unmanifest Mahadevi in order to make creation possible at all. Pleased by this devotion, she emerged from his own left side, and in that same moment granted him all eight siddhis, the complete range of spiritual mastery. It is this act that gave rise to Ardhanarishvara, the form of Shiva that is half himself and half her, a single body holding both. Some tellings describe her instead emerging directly from Kushmanda's own japa mala, the very rosary held by the fourth of the nine forms, quietly tying the first half of Navaratri to its final day.
She is shown with four arms, holding a shankha, a chakra, a gada and a padma, a conch, a discus, a mace and a lotus, seated on a fully bloomed lotus. These are the same four objects traditionally held by Vishnu, and her carrying them is read as a quiet act of unity, one goddess holding what both Shiva's and Vishnu's traditions consider sacred, without treating the two as separate.
The eight siddhis she grants carry precise names and meanings of their own, anima, the ability to become infinitely small, mahima, to become infinitely vast, garima, immense weight, laghima, weightlessness, prapti, the fulfilment of any wish, prakamya, unobstructed will, ishitva, supreme lordship, and vashitva, the power to draw all things toward oneself. Together they represent not one form of mastery but the entire range of it, in every direction a mind or body could stretch.
By this ninth day, the seeker's ascent through the nine nights, grounded at the root, opened at the heart, raised through the crown in the earlier days, reaches something beyond the chakras themselves, a state tradition describes less as a location in the body and more as the dissolving of the distance between the seeker and the goddess altogether. Where Day 1 began with a name and a mountain, Day 9 ends with a name that belongs, in some sense, to everyone who has walked these nine nights.
Her mantra is simple to close the festival with:
ॐ देवी सिद्धिदात्र्यै नमः
Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah
Til, sesame seeds, and dishes prepared from them are considered her preferred offering, along with a full nine-item thali representing all nine forms honoured across the festival.
