Collection: Maa Kushmanda
Maa Kushmanda | Day 4 of Navaratri
The Devi Kavacham names her fourth, right after Chandraghanta, and the verse describing her is unlike any before it.
सुरासम्पूर्णकलशं रुधिराप्लुतमेव च।
दधाना हस्तपद्माभ्यां कूष्माण्डा शुभदास्तु मे॥
Suraa sampoorna kalasham rudhiraaplutam eva cha,
Dadhaanaa hastapadmaabhyaam Kushmandaa shubhadaa astu me.
She holds a vessel filled with divine nectar in one lotus hand and a vessel filled with blood in the other. May Kushmanda, bearing both, be gracious to me and grant auspiciousness.
Her name comes from three small pieces, ku meaning little, ushma meaning warmth, and anda meaning cosmic egg. Before the universe existed in any form, tradition holds that only darkness remained, and it was Kushmanda's smile alone, requiring no effort, no battle, no long penance, that broke that darkness and let the cosmic egg, the Brahmanda, take shape. Everything that exists afterward, every star, every planet, every living being, unfolds from that one act of quiet joy.
The two vessels in her hands, one holding nectar and the other holding blood, carry a meaning worth sitting with. Creation, in her form, is shown as something that holds both nourishment and raw life-force together, the gentle and the primal, in the very same pair of hands.
She is shown with eight arms, earning her the name Ashtabhuja, holding a bow, an arrow, a lotus, a discus, a mace, a rosary and the two kalashas, in various hands. The combination is unusual among the Navadurga. Most forms of the Goddess are shown holding either weapons or symbols of grace, while Kushmanda holds protection and creation together in the same set of hands.
She rides a lion, and her complexion is golden, said to glow with the same radiance as the sun itself. Tradition places her residence inside the sun, governing what is called Surya Lok, the solar realm, which means every ray of sunlight reaching the earth is, in this understanding, a small extension of her own light.
Her name carries a second, quieter meaning as well. In Sanskrit, kushmanda is also the word for a white pumpkin or ash gourd, and this vegetable is traditionally offered to her in worship, giving the goddess of cosmic creation a name shared with something as humble as a garden fruit.
Worship on Day 4 is said to move the seeker's energy into the Anahata, the heart chakra, the exact midpoint of the body's seven energy centres. After grounding at the root, patience at the sacral centre, and courage at the solar plexus, the ascent through the nine nights now reaches the heart, the seat of compassion and connection to others.
Her mantra is simple to hold through the day:
ॐ देवी कूष्माण्डायै नमः
Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah
Malpua, a soft, sweet fried delicacy, is offered to her as bhog. Traditions differ slightly on her favoured flower, with red blooms and jasmine both commonly offered.
