Maa Mahagauri | Day 8 of Navaratri
The Devi Kavacham names her eighth, and where Kalaratri showed darkness in its fullest form, this verse shows what waited on the other side of it.
श्वेते वृषे समारूढा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः।
महागौरी शुभं दद्यान्महादेवप्रमोददा॥
Shvete vrishe samaarudhaa shvetaambaradharaa shuchih,
Mahaagauree shubham dadyaan mahaadeva pramodadaa.
Seated upon a white bull, dressed entirely in white, pure and radiant, may Mahagauri, who delights Mahadeva himself, grant auspiciousness upon me.
Her name joins maha, great, with gauri, fair or radiant, and two stories, both carried through tradition, explain how she came to wear it. In the gentler telling, Shiva, teasing the dark-skinned Parvati by calling her Kali, prompted her to undertake fierce penance for a fairer form, and Brahma, unable to grant that boon directly, advised her to bathe in the Ganga instead, where the darkness washed away entirely. In the second telling, the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha had secured a boon that only a virgin, golden form of Parvati could defeat, and it was for this reason, not vanity, that she sought the transformation, stepping into the river not to become beautiful but to become capable of what needed doing.
Either way, the river does the same work in both versions. It does not add anything to her. It only washes away what had gathered on her through the trials of the earlier days, the ash and dust of Brahmacharini's long penance, the darkness taken on through Kalaratri's fiercest battles, revealing the radiance that had been underneath all along.
She is shown with four arms, riding a white bull, dressed entirely in white, holding a trident and a damaru, a small hand-drum, with her remaining two hands raised in abhaya and varada, fearlessness and blessing. Her complexion is compared to the conch shell, the moon, and the jasmine flower, three different whites standing in for the same idea of something made completely clean.
Some traditions hold that the crown chakra, the Sahasrara, completes itself here on Day 8 rather than on Day 7, describing Kalaratri as the one who clears the space and Mahagauri as the one who finally occupies it, two goddesses working as a single act rather than two separate stops on the same ascent. Both readings agree on what matters most, that this stage of the nine nights is where the work of the earlier days is finally allowed to rest.
Her mantra is simple to hold through the day:
ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः
Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah
Coconut is considered her preferred offering, along with sweets made from it, and she is prayed to especially for forgiveness, marital harmony, and a clean start.
